I fell in love with paddling and Vancouver Island simultaneously, on my very first trip, which my dad took me on when I was thirteen years old. We paddled in the Broken Group for five days, Clarke Island was the most beautiful place I had ever seen! My Dad and I continued these paddling trips throughout my teens, exploring the sounds from Barkley to Kyuquot. 11 years ago I began working for Deep Cove Kayak, where I am now the Paddling School Director. At Deep Cove, I have been fortunate enough to be mentored by some of the best rough-water paddlers as well as be exposed to ocean racing. These influences have now led me to attempt to beat Russell Henry's human-powered circumnavigation record of Vancouver Island. I need to paddle around the island in just under 13 days. The end result is not necessarily in my hands or of great concern....I'm just going to take good care of myself, paddle fast, make good choices and
